The Cardboard Shoes

by Jane E Pearce

We went to Bill's viewing
last night. They say he died
from stress and heart trouble.
He had stress all right- a big
mortgage, three cars, a wife
that spent him dry,
but he was the epitome
of fashion-always dressed
to the nines in elegant
suits and Italian made shoes-
everything had to be perfect
with Bill-pants pressed
razor sharp, fancy shirts,
and silk ties, Well,
they laid him out
in an Armani suit, french
cuffed shirt, and a silk tie.
He would have been as pleased
as punch--except for
those ugly gray cardboard shoes.
