Daydream

by Richard Vince

One of these days, I will tell you
Exactly how I've been feeling about you
Since the evening we met,
And how your smile hit me
Like a gentle wave of honey.

And you will be shocked
Or scared
Or simply rendered speechless,
Depending on how obvious I'm being.

But until then, I will daydream
About going to the sea with you,
And walking through woods
Past waterfalls with you,
And spending sunny summer
Sunday mornings in your arms,
And anything else we do
In the world inside my head.

After all, if you were really here,
You would see how excited I get
When the phone rings
And it might be you,
And you would hear the way
I talk about you, and notice
The glow in my face when I do.

And you might choose to love me
Out of sympathy for my
Pathetic, unrequited love.

Don't let me cut into your
Busy schedule, composed of people
Infinitely more important than me.
Just ignore me until I go away
And you won't have to think
About me any more.

I know there is no room for me
At your table, and that
You will never be the Sun
By whose light I wake.
But I can daydream.
