long rows of thistles
great bushes of poison oak
calm dangerous green

tall mustard flowers
rise above prickly thistles
crowding narrow path

coyote peak looms
man's spirit soars toward mountain
Spring's mudholes grab feet

fresh leaves new grasses
swallows swoop around dead oak
the earth awakens

poppies everywhere
once-frozen pond teems with life
small children splashing

on coyote peak!
descending sun illumines
green hills below feet
