The Lesson

by Jane E Pearce

Will we learn from history my dear,
that flowed with rivers of blood,
and tortured souls "different" my dear,
while ravaging communes that stood.

Will we learn from history my dear,
the creed that gave rise to hate
any Gods different than theirs my dear,
and decide the "heathen's fate.

Will we learn from history my dear,
bias against other hues of skin,
hearts of hate for no reason my dear,
and ever closed to letting them in.

Will we learn from history my dear,
cadaver on cadaver piled ten deep,
while we lived uninvolved my dear,
to not hear our Jewish brothers weep.

We must learn from history my dear,
about horrors men can't deny,
for without our vigilance my dear,
the next victims may be you and I.
