Obbly gobbly

by Anne Howe

Gobstopper balls and walnut whips
Salt and vinegar on hot potato chips
Wine gums, mint balls and sherbert dips
Paper wrapped black jacks and purple lips

Hot Vimto cordial
And toast, with butter dripping
Rain upon the window panes
The wind fair ripping

Raincoat made of gabardine
And white socks neatly turned
Red knees, chapped knees
That cold wind never learned.

Up and down the slippery dip
Shine it well and backwards flip
Climb the slope and descend the stair
Back to front; we didn't care.

Upside down on the tippler bars
With eyes popping; face going red
Falling off and grazing a knee
Then trying one leg instead!

Gobstopper balls and walnut whips
Salt and vinegar on hot potato chips
Breaking the chicken bone and making a wish
'oly days of obbly gobbly and on Fridays, fish.

Lancashire Catholic kids referred to Holy Days of Obligation as " 'oly days of obbly gobbly."
