Love's pledge

by Anne Howe

Dear child I look upon your tender face
Newborn and pure, you're welcomed to this world;
A brightly coloured rainbow sky unfurled
A wish upon a shooting star ere placed.
Your fragrant skin is soft; I kiss and taste
The salt of life, like oyster's birth of pearl.
Whence came this miracle into the world?
What reason to be born into this place?

Oh little one, 'twas love that brought you here;
An embracing love 'neath moon one summer night
And so my child be bold and of good cheer
We're here to laugh and play, and soothe your fright.
We pledge this day, unfailing love to share;
Our progeny; sweet miracle of life.
