Freedom's Laughter

by David R Spellman

As you go through this life
Take nothing personally
Realize that those who may
Covertly plot against you
Or openly show their despise
Only do so from some deep
Feeling of their own inadequacy
Or disturbed demented purpose
Based upon misguided judgment
And impressionable perceptions
Unable to confront their own
Lingering demons which drag them
Deeper into abysmal quagmires
Languishing there, forever chained.
Pity them, yes – perhaps even
Feel sorrow for their blindness
But rise above it with simple
Understanding of truths that
Remain hidden and unattainable
To those lost in selfish pursuits.
Let your own laughter allow you
To rise above the horrid stench
From the sewer of their making
Free from meaningless attempts
To bring you down to that pit.
Soar... soar above it all
Be assured they will never
Capture the beauty of your spirit.
And laugh at their foolishness...
But remember too, forgive them
They really know not why.
