Playwrights In Your Palace

by Betania Tesch

Are there playwrights in your palace dear
do they speak in foreign tongues
about things I could never know
unless I turned my mind inside out
and learned the language on your lips
Are there lovers on your planet
do they hide in shady springs
and sing each other lullubies
under thick green skies of joy
Are there dancers in your kingdom
do you pay them from your vaults
and have them hum tunes of exaltation
as they hang from vines in your garden
and twirl before your sleepy eyes
Would you know them if you met them
outside of your sheltered world
and could you name a beauty eternal
if it didn't come from your will
would you identify with joy
if no one handed it a nametag
are there playwrights in your palace
lovers on your planet
dancers in your kingdom
or is it just you that makes it seem that way?
