WILLOW (If You Ever Softly Call...)

by Ken Harnisch

Yes, I’ll be there by the willow tree
On lazy, sleepy afternoons
Or some hot and hazy night in June
If you ever softly call to me

I’ll spread a blanket by the stream
While you ramble through the grassy lea
And I will smile when I see
My sweet mirage, now living dream

You dressed in sable, shimmering there
While I in shadow, breathlessly
Reach to bring your trembling form to me
And press my lips against your hair.

We may never hear the water flow
Or see the sun dip from the sky
Realize the purple night slipped by
For time itself may end, or slow

Always, I will be there by the willow tree
And though the passion, glowing bright
May just be some velvet dream tonight
It will be ours, if you ever softly call to me
