Punxsutawney Phil by Mary Ellen Smith
his handlers take him from his lair
feed him well, comb his hair.
talk to him in groundhogease
a kind of rodentie-like wheez.
prepare him for all the bright lights
easy now, sometimes he bites!
cameras ready, the crowd is growing
to see this rodent, weather knowing.
top hatted men in winter dress
hold him up to see the press
pen in hand they wait to see
what the groundhog will decree.
Punxsutawney looks around
sees a shadow on the ground.
six more weeks of winter still
flurries, rain and snowey chill.
the chubby rodent's chore is done
the crowd goes on to have some fun.
they take him back where till next year
he'll sit upon his groundhog rear. 02/02/2002 Posted on 02/02/2002 Copyright © 2024 Mary Ellen Smith
