When the Church Bells Toll

by Jane E Pearce

When church bells toll,
they have the heft
of dark thunder clouds,
announcing Christ
on the horizon-
see Him ambling
down the street,
like a politician,
smiling, ready
to kiss babies,
and shake hands,
but his awed constituents
withdraw in fear of commitment,
so He takes the bus
to the next town
where He will host
a Last Supper, and test
for Judases among
the greedy, wolfing
down the bread and wine.

An intriguing modern day version of Christ in the flesh among us. I fear you are right!
