Keep a smile on your dial

by Anne Howe

from a grateful, non-Christian perspective

The Lord is not my shepherd
There is nothing that I lack
I sleep on a foam mattress
I've a warm shirt for my back

I have the highway code
To teach me right from wrong
On the highways and the byways
Whether the road be short or long

My table's spread
With fresh baked bread
I've marmalade and jam
And if I really want it
There's always a can of Spam

It's the other poor folks
Who do it tough
Along this life's pathway
The rain pours down
Their clothes get wet
Their homes are washed away

The others?
Well they beg for rain
Their land is all dried up
The plants don't thrive
People just survive
With a drop of water in their cup

The Lord is not my shepherd
'cause you see, I'm not a sheep
But if I were, I reckon I'd follow
As there'd be so much to reap

Flour's on special this week at Woolies
K Mart's got jumpers for under ten quid
Just think of all the bread we could bake
And the lives we could save, if we did

This funny old world is upside down
You know Australia's on the bottom?
It's roundabout and inside out
Too many folk have too much clout
And for some life's just plain rotten

Sometimes I sit and ponder
On the plight of poorer folk
And often when I do
I get a big lump in my throat

I just turn on my water tap
To make my Tetley's cuppa
And press a button to ignite the stove
To make the old man's supper

Out there is some poor woman
Unshod, in heat and dust
Walking miles to fetch the water
Which for her baby is a 'must'

When next I'm tempted to grumble
You can note it on my file
'cause it's the woman who walks for water
Who wears the bigger smile :)
