If I Should Die Before I Wake

by Jane E Pearce

If I should die before I wake,
before you weep and wring
your hands, make me pretty-
comb my hair,a little rouge,
lipstick, and eyebrow pencil,
dress me in a vibrant color,
no blacks or browns-red will do.
Then tune the radio
to a station that plays ragtime
twenty-four hours a day,
and if I get any calls, say
I've gone to a grand party,
where the moon always shines,
and there's flowers on every table,
with an orchestera that plays
whatever song I'm thinking
without having to ask,where
the dance goes on forever,
with no more good-byes,
but
if I should wake before I die,
make me smile!
