The Child From Within

by Lori I Wolfe

In the shadows I see you
just lurking about
peering through darkness
not wanting to come out

Afraid of what you'll see
unwilling to know
just at that edge
standing there all alone

I try so hard
to get you to come out
but you bow your head
then begin to pout

"What will I do with you?"
I say out loud
"You can't just stand there
with your head in the clouds."

But you take a step back
into the darkness you go
hiding your secrets
you not wanting me to know

So I went to the switch
and I turned on the light
I was surprised to see
who I had in my sight

I thought it was a child
that I was trying to free
But instead
I found that it was just me
