Paper Valentine

by Mary Ellen Smith

If I could make a paper heart sing
Cut out a bunch to hang on a string,
Each heart a note, each string a song
I would tie them together until it was long.

We could turn our dreams into a kite.
Paint it warm colors and turn it to flight.
Our hearts would be singing and touching the sky
A melody so lovely, t'would make the clouds cry.

We could run through the tears, miss all the thunder.
Compose our own skies and stand still in wonder.
My valentine to you, more than paper and string,
If I could but make a paper heart sing!
