Philosophical Ramblings

by Adrian Calhoun

We hold ourselves so high,
self-righteous at times.
As humans we pride ourselves,
as being the most advanced species.

Are we?

Unknowing of their own mortality,
so many try to conquer the world,
and so many fail.

Why not instead,
try to make the little corner of the world,
in which you reside,
a better place.

Those who have tried,
so valiantly to save the world,
usually find,
that the world is self destructive,
and mankind wishes not to be saved.

Self appointed kings,
playing god,
consumed by pure greed.
They have all said;
"To hell with my fellow man,
more for me. Get out of my way,
I want it all!"

Eventually,
all empires shall fall.
In the end,
what have they gained?

If a millionaire dies,
isn't he just a dead man?

When the man who controlled,
with an iron fist dies,
what grip does he have?

Those with but one ambition in life,
fame, fortune, or power,
sell their souls.

They are shallow,
empty and cold.
As a corpse they exsist,
rotting away any humanity.

In the end,
we are all the same,
merely dead.

All one can control,
is themselves.
Do not let "life" pass you by.

And yes, the world will go on,
with or without,
you and I.

The cynic would say. Reminds me of Ecclesiastes! Yet, in the early lines you pose the question concerning leaving the corner of your world a better place. I think this is a worthy goal and one that can be acheived and has been by many. One day we shall all know just how much good has survived in spite of all the evil. A thought provoking poem.
