a lady (must do) by Deborah S ReganA lady
Stops climbing trees (she's not a child)
She doesn't bother men
Unless they want her.
Sometimes she turns the other cheek
(bad girls are beneath her)
not a whine or uncrossed leg to be found
she hears authorities' tirades with shut lips,
bears all with an open mind and heart.
Leaves lingerie only on beds neatly made,
Stands by her slob, her accuser, her tyrant.
Watches, watches her figure- her only chip.
Says nice things only to other ladies,
And reserves judgement for gossip.
She's popular enough to be wanted (never aggressive)
Conversation is her duty, not her need
Opinions are thought, not spoken
Loudness is unbecoming
"nagging?" never (comically, if ever.)
she is looked at, her dress should only hint at her assets
and she is conditioned and reconditioned:
the pulp of the melon is scooped out (but put back in the shell again)
hollow and full- pretty for the party,
ripe for the guests.
