Ages Across The Oceans

by Jacki M Butler

As I walked along the shore
I stumbled over a strange shell
Covered in sand and seaweed
It clearly was unique.
As I shook the water out,
Removed the greens that stuck to it
I noticed that it was a beautiful conch
A shell not to often found intact
Brushing it free of sand
I remembered something from my youth
My grandmother said,
"Hold it to your ear, you can hear the ocean"
A smile crosses my face
I tenderly raise the shell to my ear
Silence
Close your eyes
Believe
I can hear the waves
Crashing along the shore
So relaxing
The gentle hum
Setting it in my bag
I take it back with me
To my cottage to clean it
To bring it home with me
Now everytime I pick up that shell
I will remember the sounds of the ocean
Of my grandmother's sweet voice
And I will be at home.
