birth

by Julie Adams

some hour, years ago
this day broke you free

stole you into life
torn from the womb
the belly that sustained you
the incubator of a mother's flesh

the cycle of life
gave you life, and
in that teary hour, years ago
this day broke you free

later, you grew into the mold
pre-destined for you, before you
preset by parental traits, constraints
pre-constructed by society, by-standers

and the moment you begin to fulfill it
you, too, break from it
like the womb--you tear away
into who you are
today
who you want to be
who you will be
another hour, years
from now

but this will always be
the day that broke you free
