The World Owes You

by Betania Tesch

The world crawled in to your bed
and whispered its desires
so you fled in nightgown
to the nearest automatic redemption teller
and emptied your account.
Millions of moral moments
$
cashed in for the promise
of a better life for your sacrifice
but, darling, the world never paid off
and you're left empty-handed and hungry
now crawling in to the beds
of those with something left.
You've become the world
and you're still longing
because no one can feed you
and now you're in debt,
but no one remembers what value is anymore.
So hang your head
and close your eyes
because the world has gone broke.
