Brief is Beautiful

by Ronald A Pavellas

It is probably self-serving
To say so, but I cannot resist:
Long poems lose me.

My eye is drawn to:
The pithy, the direct;
The illuminating, as in
A small spotlight drawing
One's attention to an interesting object.

The complex, the meandering,
The maudlin, the windily self-centered
Glaze my eyes and
Cast my attention elsewhere.

So, forgive me, excellent fellow poets,
For my inattention to the longer phrase,
The convoluted concoction,
Clever as some manifestly are.

I crave the simple exposition on:
A thought
A feeling
An insight
A revelation!

And now ...
I'm about to exceed my own attention span...

My attention span isn't much longer than yours I guess... I feel terrible when I see a title that is so promising, and then open the poem and see it's more than what will fit on my screen, by a LONG way... I feel like I'm such a heel...
