Margaret (mother)

by David R Spellman

I've known you
Even before I gained consciousness
And indeed
Every part of my nature
Is touched by you
Your influence on my life
Has always been felt
Since birth
And all those innocent years
When you carried me forth
Explaining the things around me
Which captured my attention
All the patience you practiced
When my own will began to form
Leading me to stray from your protection
Into a world which I inherit

Through the years
We've both grown so much
And often now
Live lives
Separate and distant
From each other
And are frequently caught
In our own everyday dealings
Which tend to shut out
Other thoughts
Which would flood our minds

But many is the time
When I think of you
And all that you've done for me
And I'm so grateful
For all the love
You have given me
And each day I give back
This own love of mine
For this life
God-given through you
