progress??

by Deborah S Regan

You ask me, "why not eugenics?"
To stare into the defective mass of humanity
And meet unblinking eyes,
And come to judgements
(When my own origins are known to me,
When I would not exist
Under programs such as yours)
And I can't come to logic to answer you

If I quantify the abstract,
If I quantify experience,
Put barbed wire around adversity,
Equate ends with meanings,
Stand toe to toe with theorizing,
Shake Robert Moses' hand,
I would shift weight self-consciously
(But I would know, I'm kidding myself).

You might grab yourself a gorilla,
Put him in an automobile,
Shave him, love him,
Shout to him, "Evolve, damn you!"
But a gorilla stays conspicuously gorilla-like.
And the human race is the human race.
(I wish I could have been there
when optimism filled the minds of tweed-jacketed men.)
