No Place To Go

by Ashley Beaudoin

They call me Jeffery
Do you know what sticks out in my mind?
My childhood
My mother crying
My father’s eyes
The eyes we were terrified of
Do you know what sticks out in my mind?
What I remember most?
That very night
I had no place to go
But home
The place I dreaded most
No one to help me from this place
Nothing to turn to in a time like this
Do you know what sticks out in my mind?
That very night
I wanted to talk to someone
The night my life was ruined
I had no place to turn to
I headed straight for what I terrified most
My father’s eyes
Do you know what sticks out in my mind?
My mother crying
Lying on the floor with tears running down her face
Bruises all over the place
My father and that whiskey bottle in his hand
My father’s eyes right at me
His fist coming towards my face
The bottle going towards my head
Do you know what sticks out in my mind?
The sound of the gun going off
The fall of that man to the floor
The sight of his eyes on mine
My mother’s terrified look
I had no other choice
Do you know what sticks out in my mind?
They said it was murder
They call me 0103235
