Sky

by Richard Vince

Does the sky know it's Christmas?
Does it even know it's nearly
The end of another year?

It seems to me that every day
Is basically the same to it.
Maybe it doesn't even know
That it changes colour, or that
Sometimes it is full of stars.

Maybe it isn't even real...
Just a word we assigned once
To what we see when we look up.

It might be made of air,
In which case are we breathing
The bits of the sky that are lower down?
I am not convinced; after all,
Where does the air stop
And the sky begin? And how can the sky
Contain stars if they are in space?

Alternatively, the sky might
Be made of space that we
Can see through our air.
But if space is indeed nothing,
Surely the sky is also nothing.
So where does the sky stop and space begin?

It could just be something
Made up to fool innocent people,
And to give poets something to
Write about looking into.

Maybe everyone is wrong,
And it really is a band of blue felt tip
At the top of the page after all.

Whatever it is, it probably
Does not know anyway.
So I doubt it will be celebrating
Christmas day, with the rest of us.
And how would it know anyway?
