velvet mittens and blankets of ice

by Rachelle Howe

would you be offended
if i told you that i noticed
the way you flirt with me
effortlessly
and speak of nights
you wish in my bed
but still treat the situation
with habitual blanketed ice,
which screams to me
(and correct me if i'm wrong)
that you're just as unsure
as i
and you're just as fragile.

so treat me gently
with velvet mittens,
and in return,
i'll tuck you away
in my jewelry box,
or next to my CDs
(which we all know
are my prized possessions..)
and hide me in your smile
while i protect you
from yourself.
