A kiss..

by Leandra K Brossard

A beautiful night, the stars aglow,
Who would have guessed? How was I to know?
Friendly banter back and forth,
Laughing, glances, smiles, but more.
This is happiness, I know,
At last I found, here, just so...
The tilt of face, a rosy cheek,
The quirk of eyebrow, hardly meek,
The grass, the light, coquettish moon,
I should have know it would be soon,
But I, unknowing, and unaware,
Did not think I should prepare, for what?
What could happen here?
This sky so cold,
This air so clear?
A voice, a question,
brief but sure:
"There was something I've been meaning to ask you..."
A start of surprise, but what to protest?
Surely not this, a kiss...
You wonderful, marvelous, miserable fool...
How cunningly hopefully, helpless
are you?
I thought myself certain,
knew where I stood,
now I'm tossed yet again on my own.
