The Duet

by Rhodora M Fitzgerald

God gave you an authoritative voice; said the sun...
I marvel at the prominent tones which you possess.
Just look at your versatility... my friend,
and understand, it is of this, I am most envious.

Oh, but you, replied the cloud...
shine powerfully of lighthearted brilliance.
I am awed by the intensity of your rays,
especially in their humbled silence.

Ahh, but that voice! It is everchanging,
from the soft and gentle tickling of a morning rain,
to a clamorous, erratic thunderstorm;
...it is all but found mundane.

Yes! But I find it so astounding
how you spread comfort to saddened faces,
and wrap your arms around the lonely
engulfing them in warm embraces.

Ahh... 'tis true, sighed the smiling sun,
But what expansive freedom is your treasure.
Oh! To soar with the winds the way you do
would bring to me such pleasure.

Ohhh.. groaned the exhausted cloud;
Resent me not for my independence,
or my unstable need to travel and explore,
for it is your unfaulturing strength and
faithful perseverence that I adore.

But just look in the sky at what you've painted
as you were parading around so gallant!
Have you never looked back to see
the breathtaking results of your artistic talent?

Reflectively the cloud replied; I don't deny,
I yield a mighty brush that paints some awesome sights,
but what would my subdued canvas be
if it were not illuminated... by your dynamic lights?

At once... the sun and cloud took respite,
as their reflective thoughts ignited.
And it was at that harmonious moment,
the expansive heavens were delighted,
by the exquisite rainbow that was sighted
...as the sun and cloud united.
