Grandma Doesn't Know Me

by Rhodora M Fitzgerald

Grand-mothers are just that,
they're mothers that are grand.
They help you grow
and teach you things,
and they always understand.
They always have a hug for you
and a pat upon your back,
and when you've found some mischief
your backside gets a whack.
You're always welcome at her house,
it's a private bed and breakfast.
And when you're offered ice cream
you know that she'll insist.
She makes the best chicken and dumplings
you'd ever want to eat.
So, to plan a visit at gramma's
is really quite a treat.

But this is what I didn't know,
that as I was growing up...
grandma too was getting older.
And that one day she would need
to rest her head upon MY shoulder.
I didn't think I'd see the day
when we'd place her in a home,
and let strangers tuck her in at night
and leave her all alone.
I never dreamt the day would come
when Grandma wouldn't know my name.
Or that she'd ever not be able,
to play my favorite game.
I have memories that prove her love,
she's done so much to show me.
And I still get my hugs and kisses.....
but Grandma doesn't know me.
