The New Kid

by Angel J McRae

It was a cool summer day and the men carried the furniture
Through the yard like determined ants preparing for the winter.
I rode over on my pink and white bike, still equipped with training wheels.
“All it takes is a simple hello to start a friendship,”
I continued to repeat over and over to myself.
And then there she was,
Wandering around aimlessly in her new surroundings.
What if she’s mean and tries to take over, it’s my turf!
I’ve lived here my whole life,
And I’m not going to let anyone else spoil my fun!
I’m rarely selfish and judgmental like this,
So even though I wanted myself to be nice and welcoming,
I still had to stand firm ground and beware
Of what trouble a new kid could cause me.
The words just seemed to go floating out of my mouth
As I introduced myself to her,
And I didn’t feel threatened once we greeted.
A simple hello is all it takes to begin a wonderful friendship,
And that’s exactly what it is!
