June Falls Too

by Richard Vince

Do you remember when
I would have kissed you
Had the ocean not been in the way?

And do you still remember
Your own voicemail number
By heart?

I do.

But, as you reminded me,
It isn't just May...
June falls too.
And somehow, another June
Fell while I wasn't looking.

It was yesterday, and yet
Now it contrives to be yesteryear.

Such a strange year too.
Even stranger than this one
Which is close to being over now.
A year when reality never quite
Caught up with me, though
I could feel its claws
Thrusting for my feet.

But somehow, you are
Exactly where I thought you'd be,
And you have someone else
To keep you afloat in the ocean
Now.

How I ended up here
I'll never know.

I still miss you,
Even though I never felt
Like I knew you after all,
And I never did run my
Fingers through your hair.

So, I'll go to my stars now,
And leave you to yours.

Have a pretty night, you.
