Beautiful

by Richard Vince

Since when did showing a bit of cleavage
Make you beautiful?

You didn’t have to try to be beautiful,
Only to fit in; and beauty
And an ability to fit in
Are not the same thing,
No matter what TV
Would have you believe.

I wish your parents had told you
How beautiful you are, instead of
Telling you that you could be beautiful
If you tried; or if you had
A bit of work on your teeth,
And around your eyes,
And on your nose…
And maybe your lips too.

All it did was
Get you to Hollywood.
And that’s a pretty sick dream
For any parent to have.

But there you are now,
And here I am, writing about you
And how you never needed to try.

You’re still just as beautiful
As you always were, you’ve just
Hidden it behind surgery
And dieting, and being
A movie star.

And if I had known you
Before all that,
I’d have told you so.
