`` Ostend Street Bridge

by Amy M Fitch

Down on Ostend where the bridge meets the street,
You'll find an old man in nothing but rags
Just holding a can waiting for something to eat.

"Hey, I'll work for a dime.
Or maybe a quarter if you're kind.
And I promise to do real good.
I'll make you proud."

But you don't see him or even hear his words.
He watches you go as you continue on home.
And if he could, he would do the same.
But he stands in wait for another random face.
