The Last Words Ever Written

by D. Xavier Bari

The last words ever written,
on the night the bombs fall,
will not be some grand discourse
prattling about the folly of human nature.
They won't be an epic elegy,
lamenting the frail beauty of snuffed out lives
or the tragedy of a paradise lost.

Nothing profound,
    grandiose,
        or avant-garde.
Nor will they be a rant of poignant inquiry
of how man could knowingly bring about his own destruction.

No, the last words ever written will be none of these.
They will be trite and commonplace.
A half-finished grocery list.
The scores from the latest playoff games.
A come-on scrawled across a bar room napkin.
Or perhaps fresh pink graffiti,
    on abandoned alley walls...

The last words ever written,
    will say nothing at all.

Powerful message, powerful writing. Crystal clear imagery.

Very powerful write...and probably true. I cannot remember the last words my Mom or Dad said to me, perhaps because they were not profound. They were just talking. I just wish I had listened better, even though I had no idea it was the last words I would ever hear from them- excellent- just excellent
