Friends for a Season

by Holly H Dunne

Remember all the happy times we had together
we said we'd all be friends forever
laughing, running, play a silly game
never let it change, always stay the same
sitting on our island, in the middle of the road
everyone was welcome to come out of the cold
from shadows of lonliness we all formed a group
and opened our arms to all to join our troop

rejects and loners became sisters and brothers
always looked after while you looked after others
an ear to listen, a tissue to dry your tear
a hug to warm your heart and take away your fear
a gentle soothing voice, an arm to hold you close
our friendship seeds were planted and blossmed like a rose
we all had a family, the closet type of bond
we all belonged to each other, people we'd become so fond

but nothing lasts forever, time peeled us apart
and each time someone left, they took a piece of my heart
gradually, slowly, our family broke down
and all those happy smiles replaced by a frown
one by one we drifted as petals from a dying flower
and i wish the sun would shine just for one more hour
how can people that were so close be so far away
why did you all leave when i wanted you to stay?

i love you all so deeply, you gave me a reason
and although im sad you're gone, at least i had you for a season.
