Elegy for George (The Quiet One)

by Bruce W Niedt

I want to tell you,
you were really something,
all those years ago,
when you were fab.
We got our minds set on you,
and your three best mates.

For a while they eclipsed you,
the dark horse,
but then – here came the sun.
You gave us love, gave us peace on earth,
the Concert for Bangladesh.
We loved you for a long, long, long time,
and you shone, despite the assaults,
within you, without you –
the sue-me-sue-you blues,
the cancer, the knife-crazy fan.

In the end, it was all too much.
But what is life?
All things must pass.
All worries are behind you now –
the taxman, the “piggies”.
While your guitar gently weeps,
you’re leaving the material world
to be with your sweet Lord.

[In memoriam, George Harrison, 1943-2001. The poem incorporates titles of songs he wrote – see how many you can find….]
