wild bird

by Holly H Dunne

this flock of birds so wild and free
so full of joy so full of glee
sing and dart and swoop adn dive
so full of spirit, so alive
take in a wild bird to their nest
love her, feed her with sweet caress
teach her to sing, teach her to fly
teach her to laugh, teach her to cry
she feels the wind tickle her face
feather light love from their gentle embrace
suddenly she falls from the arms of the sky
with a broken wing, a damaged beak, she chokes a goodbye
the flock encircle, pull her back from death's clutch
but she lies on the ground, flinching at their touch
refuse to give up, they lift her in the air
surround her with kindness and sweet loving care
take it in turns to look after and nurse her
they'll stay till the end and they'll never desert her
fix her broken beak and bandage her wing
they return their gift she dropped and remind her how to sing
