beneath the surface

by Holly H Dunne

gaze upon the glassy lake
perfect, untouched, calm, serene
shimmering reflection of the beauty
sunlight's finger's tickle and produce dimples
deep below the surface torrents rage
silvery shoals have destroyed each other
all life has breathed its last
all bubbles of hope have been burst
the laughing stream which once fed the lake has run dry
boulders roll along the bed, crushing delicate flowers
building up, building up, building up
but they never break down
raindrops dance on the lake
but no one hears them spalsh
no one hears them splash

congrats on POTD, holly. i like the repetition at the end of the poem - it's really effective. sometimes things just need to be said more than once.
