"exact change only!" --
the thing most often yelped
by the scruffy, burly bus driver
who -- as a trio of blue-haired,
busy-bodies commented --
was in dire need of a bath.

he was set in his ways,
addicted to his routine, and
wouldn't allow any sort of give-or-take
when it came to his rules --

particularly the one in regard
to the 'forbidden white line.'
which, as a child and like so many others...
i wanted desperately to cross.

just
once.
