Blue Days Sing

by Rhodora M Fitzgerald

Why does the sun shine
when my days are blue?
How can the wind blow
when I and you
suffer unspoken quarrels?
How do the birds sing
and fill the air with happy song-
though our silent day is long?
Why will the moon and stars hang high
when day is gone and it grows nigh?
All these things, I love so much,
would make a perfect day
If only you would look
and smile my way.

I wish that I could see
the other side of the mountain,
of what tomorrow will hold.
I wish that all our future days
will be like that of old.
I pray that the other side
is less steep than that we've climbed.
I pray we don't tumble down
and hit the cold ground hard.
If the sun must shine on my blue days,
let it be in your eyes.
If the wind must blow and the birds must sing,
Let this happiness; in your ears ring.
And the moon and stars which hang by night,
will care for you, and be yours;
a guiding light.
So, if I can't speak of my hearts sting,
For you, may blue days sing.
