A hoot in a boot (Animal frolics)

by Anne Howe

The children thought it an absolute hoot
That Jimmy the fieldmouse lived in a boot
Beside the back door.
With scritching and scratching
Behind laces cross hatching
His window, a hole in the toe.

Toilet tissue and socks
He dragged in the lot
With hummungus effort and fight
He'd feast upon seed,
Play around for a while
And then settle down for the 'night'.

The interesting thing
Which we were to find out
Was that Jimmy just slept in the day
It was at night that we heard him
Performing his chores
And scritching and scratching away.
