One More Day

by John D Uzzell

We sit in front of the fire watching the flames do their dance
It is such a sight. It is like they have a life of their own
Moving side to side up and down
She carries their beauty like no one I have ever known

The warmth of her smile as she shines
The strength in her laugh as she enjoys one of my silly jokes
I can think of another that can make me smile as she does
But she wouldn’t be real. There is no other beyond the dream I already have. No other life I want.

A thought of the past of when I would find her
The one that can calm this pirates heart
One look, one smile. That is all it took
To tame this boy, to free him from his self imposed way
To live for one more day
