You Know Who You Are

by Devon E Mattys

Suddenly in snapshots,
in freezeframe memories,
I see us through the years,
our pasts, our histories...
how they intertwined
and how we all met
strange how we became friends
through encounters we'll never forget.

Still, if I think, I see myself
wandering into class--
it was the first day of school,
my shirt bore that Tazmanian Devil, Taz...
and you were sitting there
across the room...
I only knew you vaguely from the year before,
but that would be changing soon.

And sitting in gym class,
you were some girl I thought I maybe knew,
walking up to me,
starting a conversation out of the blue...
it took me two weeks
to learn your name for sure...
we were both awkward kids,
each a little insecure.

And the last of you--
sitting at the lunch table...
didn't we have a brief rivalry
on who was the most able
at turning everything
into something lewd?
I think so--and two very active minds
fueled that futile feud...

Haha, remember
parties at the end of the year?
When we thought we'd be splitting apart...
and now look at us here...
We made it through,
and maybe we're not the friends we once were,
but you're still my first friends--
you're still my girls.

And maybe we won't still be in touch
when it's everyone's turn to die,
but I know that for my part,
I'm sure as hell going to try
to stick with you guys that long.
Maybe it's pointless, you know?
Because everyone changes,
everyone grows...
But I still maintain
that there's some eternal part
of all of us
in each others' hearts...
There are little parts of you in me,
and I know that much is true...
and for all our years, I can only hope
that I, too, exist in you.

I love you guys, and you know who you are.
