Fifties child (Scenes from childhood)

by Anne Howe

Roller skates with special bearings.
Rubber wheels and all mod cons.
Made to measure toe caps, gripping
Ankles secured and ready to run.

Hang on! Where's that book;
The big one?
Just the size to fit my b-m.
On the new macadamed surface,
This really is the way to run.

Forget the feet, except for kick start.
Knees under chin, hill here I come.
70's skateboard, eat your heart out.
For now it's wheels and book and bum.
