Hide and seek (Scenes from childhood)

by Anne Howe

Crouching down amidst bright lupins tall
Clearly visible but believing not at all
The sun is setting and it's time for tea
Just the two of us; my friend and me.

Each in turn called, by a mother whose concoction
Stands cooking on the stove, on the brink of destruction
We pretend to be deaf; not hearing the yell
Though sorely tempted by the icecream man's bell.

The pink sky tells us that this day is almost done.
Our adventurer bellies are hungry but we've had such fun.
Perhaps now we'll eat, sleep and dream for a while
And tomorrow, if it's fine....we'll row down the Nile.
