Wait

by Devon E Mattys

wait for me to fall asleep
before you leave,
steal across the room,
open the door,
quietly
just as we've always tried to do

wait before you speak again
just listen for a moment
to my breathing
and yours
in, out
one of us rasping from smokes

wait to open the windows this time
maybe the fan will suffice
or the register isn't too hot
for what we're doing
tonight
you don't plan to stay too long

wait before you kiss me
to realize what you're doing,
what we're getting into,
if this happens,
no regrets
first times are forever, so can't we wait
