Illuminate

by Richard Vince

Listen, quietly…
And the Queen of the Breeze may say to you
“Come into my arms, child,
Run into my cool warmth
And share with me your dream.”

For she speaks to me,
In the cold of a crystal clear night,
Or when she is gaily ushering the clouds away,
And asks me to go with her,
So share her lonesome night
And interrupt her solitude.

And sometimes I am tempted;
And sometimes I am not.

Never have I gone, though,
And, should I take to the breeze one night,
I may never return.

Rather, I will fly on wings I have dreamed of
For so many sleepless nights,
And skim the rooftops
And float with the clouds
And watch the relentless stars
As they illuminate the endless darkness
Of the night sky.

And maybe, one day,
I will be a star myself,
Living so far from anything
That I can everything
And at last see the big picture.

But the Queen of the Breeze will never say.
She just finds more innocent hearts to play with
And more childhood dreams to realise.
