Sleepless Beauty

by Richard Vince

The lonely night breeze blows through
The gap between the window and the frame,
Sweeping with it the yellow of the streetlamps...
And I send my thoughts heavenwards,
Pouring out the contents of my heart
To the sky.

Sleep will pass my way, soon enough,
But it will evade her...
So she waits in darkness
For the dawn chorus to break the silence
And another sunrise to slowly prise open another day.

A day she will get through alone, I know,
But still I want to be there with her.

Whenever I close my eyes, hers appear before me,
Deep, dark, haunting,
The beauty of a forest in summer
Shrouded in the early morning mist,
Through which too few can see.

Whenever I write, I see her words
As they flow through her pen, from somewhere
Hidden deep within her soul.

And when I doze in silence
I hear her voice betray
That all too rare smile.

Wherever I go, I carry
Her words in my pocket,
As a reminder of when the moon turned scarlet
And the cool of the night
Could not dull the warmth in my heart.

But now, my eyes are closing,
And I whisper a quiet "goodnight",
Even though she is too far away to hear.

A futile wish for the beautiful dreamer
To whom sleep never comes.
