from a watercolour by a friend

by Anne Howe

Between herbaceous borders carefully i tread
The uneven stepping stones
Worn by the passage of time and feet
And frilled with moss of vibrant green.
Tall soldiers and pretty maids
All an impressionistic palette of fragrant delight.
The seeds of this season
Become the floral emblem of the next;
A testimony to an eternal floral geneology.
Moment by moment changing
Yet forever maintaining their painted glory.
