I don't like this poem

by Gary Hoffmann

I don't like this poem I've written
the rhymes feel too contrived
and although I strive
to write the beauty and perfection
you deserve
I want this song to go unheard
because
like it was
years ago I want these words to flow
like water around your heart
to fill your soul and not let go
and to be remembered when we grow apart
but these words are not they
these words will fall to the ground forgotten
and lay there like the misbegotten
children of an angry God
yes, these words will die an early death
never again to feel the breath
of poetry
and so you see
whether I write
of love or beauty
or the dying embers of a dying night
spent with you
it's not enough to make people understand
the silent serenity of your hands
and the brilliant depth of your eyes
for one glimpse of which I'd forsake the prize
gladly a thousand times
but you see these rhymes
are false depictions of perfection
and thus my immanent rejection
of another failed poem
